For the past eleven years, Art on the Llano Estacado has celebrated art and local artists with a show and sale. One of those artists whose work was highlighted this year was Muleshoe’s Martha Hunnicutt. Cindy Barrett, Sheila Stevenson, Pat Angeley, Sharon Agee, Sandi Chitwood, Kim Hunt, and I traveled to the Museum of Texas Tech University on June 20 to celebrate with her.

As we entered the museum, we were greeted by lovely flowers and artwork was displayed throughout.

The purpose of the event was not only to recognize the artists, but also to showcase their art for sale. So, we wandered up and down the displays and enjoyed the original pieces, of which I saw several I would not have minded taking home with me, had my pocketbook been willing!

We finally located Martha and her husband Tony as she visited with friends and art patrons.

It was nice to see Dyan Newton from Abernathy, who has given talks to the Muleshoe Art Association and judged one of our shows, as one of the featured artists of the event.

I also enjoyed talking to Jim Eppler whose ravens I have seen in galleries in Santa Fe.

Music was provided by this combo, and Tech students, one of whom was Janessa Gonzales, were milling about with trays of tasty hors d’oeuvres.

Pat, Sharon, Cindy, Martha’s husband Tony, Kim, Sandi, Sheila, and I sat down to enjoy a lovely buffet provided by some department at the university. I failed to ask who the wonderful cooks were, but it was a great spread.

After the meal, people then went back to making their purchases of the artwork. By the end of the night, Martha had sold four paintings, so I think the evening could be considered a success. We enjoyed mixing with the well-dressed art lovers and were happy to see that Martha’s talent had been recognized and put on display.

So, today she is known on the Llano Estacado; tomorrow, the World.
