Perhaps inspired by the Bula Time Capsule dug up on July 3rd after fifty years, Bailey County historian Rebecca Beall thought it appropriate that Muleshoe have one, too. So, after the 4th of July parade, a group gathered at the Muleshoe Heritage Foundation and did just that. Buried a time capsule, that is.

Enough items had been gathered and donated to fill two five gallon buckets, so we really have two time capsules!

I donated both of my books since they have Muleshoe history and people in them. Some current magazines, a Mules football t-shirt, DVDs, donated items from local businesses, coins from the current year, newspapers, Sheriff Richard Wills’ jacket patch, a 2025 MHS yearbook, and various other items relevant to 2026, were all shrink-wrapped for more protection for their fifty years in the ground.

Scott Miller, president of the Muleshoe Heritage Foundation, welcomed guests to the event.

Maggie Hollingsworth sang “God Bless America,” and we all sang along with her.

Rebecca then read the proclamation announcing the time capsule.

Jeff Coffman gave an invocation.

Then the packing of the time capsules began.

And then the buckets were sealed and placed in the hole that had been dug earlier by Chad Beall, deep enough to protect the capsules for the next fifty years. The appropriate place chosen for the burial was at the base of the double concrete mule shoes, a project organized and completed by Kermit Price in 1994 with the help of Luna Construction, Fry and Cox, and Orby and Juanita Jarman to earn one of his Eagle Scout merit badges. The giant muleshoe marking the entrance to the Heritage Center was also part of that project.

And then, in they went.

Dirt was added, then cement covered the buckets. Nothing would do but that Chad and Richard would get some help from Renleigh, a good omen since she will want to be there in fifty years to dig it up!

After it was done, Maggie Hollingsworth, Reese Reynolds, Brooklyn Beall and son Jackson,  Avery Miller, Reagan Roblez and daughter Renleigh gathered for a photo. They should all be around in fifty years to be present for the exhumation on July 4th, 2076. What a deal!

Ellis Funeral Home is ordering and donating a marker that will be set when it is completed in the near future so no one will forget where the capsules have been safely stashed for the history lesson to come.

Something to look forward to.

Thanks to Rebecca Beall and Kristi Price for their help with this story.
