I shopped at Sam’s this week, mostly for green beans to add to the dog’s supper for fiber and bulk so she won’t get too heavy since she is missing a leg. Normally, I get one gallon cans of green beans. That day there were only boxes of eight 14 oz. cans of beans. I bought eight boxes, each box actually heavier than a one gallon can.

So, when I get to the car and pop the trunk to load them, I remember I have a loaner vacuum cleaner back there, having just dropped off my vacuum cleaner to be repaired. I figured it would be easier to just put the beans in the back seat instead of rearranging stuff in the trunk. As I start to unload in the back seat, this young woman, probably twenty-something in age, appears and says, “Here, let me help you. You don’t need to be lifting heavy things,” as she smiles and starts putting the boxes in the back seat.

I remember being aware of some movement in the pick-up parked one space away from me as I trundled up to the car with the cart, and I guess she also saw me when I walked into the building and then saw me coming back, this old, gray-haired woman with a slight limp and figured I could use a little help. I just thought she worked for Sam’s, and as she loaded the boxes into the car, I just mentioned that I usually get the one gallon cans which were not available today, and that I hoped you-meaning Sam’s-would have them next time. She laughed, and said she didn’t work for Sam’s!

When the cart was empty and I was thanking her again for her help, she smiled, gathered up the cart to take it to the cart rack, said good-bye, and waved to me as I drove off.

Bless her heart! I could have loaded those boxes, but it was nice to have her help, and I appreciated her just coming to my aid out of the blue.

Random acts of kindness in action. I hope I get a chance to pass it on soon.
