Surprises from the Senecio Family
Who knew? I didn’t. All those plants I couldn’t identify? Several of them turned out to be in the senecio family. I even discovered that the giant groundsel trees that fascinated me on Kilimanjaro in 2007 are senecio kilimanjari. These senecio kilimanjari,...
Mammillaria Elongata
Mammillaria elongata makes a small flower, but is an interesting cactus, making a clump of elongated fingers, if you will, like this young plant. Another bud is just showing to the upper right of this bloom.
Rebutia Miniscula
Rebutia miniscula, as the name implies, is not a large cactus, but it delivers a nice bloom. If you look closely, you can see red buds, so I will have more flowers to enjoy.
Senecio- I Think!
This is one of the succulents I am still working on identifying, and I have decided it must be in the senecio family. If you can help me out with a name, leave me a comment. The flower is interesting, and I like the shape of the plant. This is the first one for me, so...
Faucaria tigrina, Tiger Jaws
This tiger jaws plant usually blooms in the evening, closes, and then opens again the next morning and usually stays open for a day or two. This plant doesn’t seem to be doing well right now, and I’m not happy about I’m afraid I am going to lose it. The picture...
Sedum, Unidentified !
I am guessing this is a sedum. I’m not sure sure what else it would be. The plant makes a nice mass of green and the flowers are small but delicate and pretty. If anyone can identify it, let me know.
Stenocactus multicostatus
Stenocactus multicostatus is also called brain cactus because the ridges on the body of the plant are thought resemble a brain. If you look closely, you can see two buds developing to the upper right of the flower that is already open.
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is the kalanchoe that you will see in flower shops. The blooms come in a variety of colors and it makes a nice blooming plant for a gift. As the days pass and more of the buds open, this one will make much more of a statement.
Pachypodium baronii
Pachypodium baronii buds. Pachypodium baronii flowers nine days later. Pachypodiums are a member of the family apocynaceae and are considered a caudiciform, a fat plant, because they have developed a fat water retaining base, trunk, or root for storing water during...
Cactus Do Need Water
If depriving cactus of light is the worst thing you can do to it, not watering it is the second worst. For the uninitiated, I think this is the way the reasoning goes: cactus live in the desert; deserts are dry; therefore this cactus can stay dry and doesn’t need...
