Along with some large specimens for the garden (which I will share another time), I also added some smaller non-cold hardy cactus a couple of weeks ago after a visit to Cactus Town (“Cactus Town Texas,” January 29, 2016), thelocactus Glory of Texas. And it bloomed right after I came home with it, a pleasant surprise. Well. not really-I made sure one of the two I bought had a big fat bud on it!

The nice thing about this cactus is the large flower on such a small plant. The cactus will get larger, up to 6 inches high, but that is still a smaller cactus. I happen to like its fleshy body and distinctive larger spines, some of which are red and white striped. It is recommended to be hardy in zones 9 and 10 to temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees F, and other warm zones, which means it will stay in a pot for me since we are in zone 6. But for those of you in warmer climates, this cactus could grace your garden. Enjoy.
