The Muleshoe Art Association held its 2023 Spring Art Show April 3-7 at the Oneita Wagnon Senior Center in Muleshoe. Artists from Muleshoe, Brownfield, Portales, Sudan, Slaton, Spur, and Clovis entered 108 pieces of artwork in the show. Money prizes were awarded as well as ribbons; student artists received ribbons only as required by University Interscholastic League rules.

First place in the watercolor division went to Janice Timmons. Jon Birdsong placed second and Janice Timmons also received a third place ribbon. Misti Prater, Dianne Brown, and Jon Birdsong were given an honorable mention for their work.

Luke Leal was awarded first place in the acrylic division, and that piece was later awarded Best of Show as mentioned earlier. Honorable mention was given to Sandi Chitwood, Luke Leal on another painting, and Jon Birdsong.

Devin Sisk was awarded first place for her portrait entered in the photography division. Second place went to Shirley White, and third place went to Kelly Karn. Honorable mention went to Shirley White, John Hall, and Terry Brewster.

Misti Prater won first place in the pastel and drawing division. Second place went to Neal Kelman, and third went to Vicki Diggs who also received an honorable mention in this category.

Many mediums were on display in the miscellaneous division, and Joan Nix won first with this decorated guitar. Second place went to Danita Fischbach, and third place went to Sandi Chitwood. Honorable mention ribbons went to Joan for another piece as well as Rick Williams and Alice Liles.

In the oil category, first place went to Kip DeFoor, second place was awarded to Ann Johnson, third place to another piece by Kip DeFoor, with honorable mention going to Sandi Chitwood and Kip again.

Best of show mentioned earlier, went to Luke Leal. The People’s Choice award, voted on by visitors to the show, was Misti Prater’s drawing of Mystic.

Students from Muleshoe High School and Portales High School had artwork entered as well. In the Muleshoe entries, first place went to Noah Cantu, second place to Art Ortega, and third to Mauricio Herrera with honorable mention going to Isaac Villa and Anastasia Soto.

From Portales High School first place went to Gavin Sanchez, second place to Ariathne Velderain, and third place to Rianah Sanchez. Aubrie Sanchez and Maryse Bustamante received an Honorable Mention ribbon.

Best of show in the student division went to Marlee Mendoza from Muleshoe.

The vote for the People’s Choice award in the student division went to Mauricio Herrera.

With 108 entries and a nice student selection,  the spring show had a lovely assortment of art for all tastes. If you missed the artwork this year, plan on attending next year. And if you are an artist, consider entering a sample of your work as well.

The Muleshoe Art Association meets the first Tuesday of every month August through May at the Santa Fe Depot in the Muleshoe Heritage Center at 2 p.m. New members and interested guests are always welcome.
